Hurting Hands

I feel like hell as I write this… which I guess is appropriate as Halloween is upon us again. Note: You’re about to read a self-pitying description of unpleasant symptoms… feel free to skip down to the pumpkin photo! πŸ˜›

I am suffering from Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease. I’ve spent the last few days in and out of hazy bouts of dizziness, nausea, and cold-like symptoms. The most identifiable symptom of HFM is the spots that appear all over the body.

As the name implies, they are most concentrated around the hands, feet and mouth. I’m finding it annoyingly difficult to do a lot of daily things I normally take for granted with little blisters covering my hands… turning on the taps, buttoning up baby clothes, twisting open a jar, holding a fork etc. I doubt I’d even be blogging if not for the gentle mercy of a phone’s touchscreen.

I never realised just how many objects in day-to-day life are sharp or hard-edged. On top of that, imagine trying not to squeeze spots when they are on the soles of your feet. Even when padded with socks and slippers, my feet hurt with every step. The blisters in the mouth and throat aren’t much fun either.

But all of this pales in comparison with one little bit of knowledge… I got this from Zack, which means he also felt this bad 😦

We were planning to spend a lovely day out as a family, but my wife and I noticed a rash spreading further across Zack’s body. We called 111 for medical advice and – after a phone consultation with a very helpful doctor – ended up taking Zack to Accident & Emergency.

That’s where it was confirmed that he had Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease. It seems we’re in the middle of an outbreak and it is very contagious. Zack had a couple of bad nights where he was very uncomfortable and kept waking up in pain/discomfort.

When we found out why, it was honestly something of a relief. At least we could understand why he was suffering. In fact, now that I’m feeling exactly what he was feeling, I’m not the least bit surprised. But it does make me sad that he felt as bad as I currently do. I guess that’s another part of the parenting journey.

The good news is that he’s feeling better. He still has a sore throat and cough, but his spots are clearing up and he’s sleeping much better. Even in my current state, I’m relieved he’s feeling better πŸ™‚ And even though its too painful for me to wear my wedding ring, it feels pretty cool to wear it around my neck.

“It must be taken deep into Mordor and cast back into the firey chasm from whence it came.”

And speaking of cool things… check out Zack’s first pumpkin!

Elle did all the hard work here, as my hands were useless. I have to say I’m very impressed at her skill!

Whatever you’re up to this Halloween, stay safe and have fun πŸ™‚

  1. Just catching up on my blog reading – really sorry to hear you were both struck down with this. Never had it, but it sounds really uncomfortable. Still, must have been a relief to find out it wasn’t anything more serious. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

  2. Oh wow, I didn’t even know this disease existed. It’s a relief to know that he’s back to normal now. ^^ Hopefully your new LUSH products helped you too. πŸ™‚ I do think that wearing the wedding ring as a necklace looks cool haha.

    1. Thanks (^___^) I actually miss wearing it round my neck but I already wear an important trinket around my neck that my wife gave me years ago, so back to the hand it is πŸ˜›
