Parents at Work, Parents at Play

I lately find myself thinking about single parents. I’m amazed at how they can raise a child by themself. I have so much respect for anyone who does, because I know just how much work it is.

My little boy Zack recently turned one year old. He’s crawling, he’s loud, and he returns affection with his entire body (he’s learned to lunge into a hug). I love him with all my heart and am grateful for him every day.

But it’s obviously hard caring for him… even harder when you have to work full-time to make ends meet.

No matter how hard a day at the office is, it’s when I get home that the worthwhile work begins. Be it cooking dinner, feeding Zack, washing up dishes, bathing him, changing him and… of course… trying to put him to sleep (which can be the most difficult task). Any chore I’m doing is interrupted by his need for attention… a reassurance that I’m not ignoring him.

“Dad! I’m here! I’m over here, Dad! It’s me tugging on your leg. Dad, I’m down here!”

(Don’t worry… I instantly picked him up after quickly snapping this photo)

Each evening is a busy one, and that’s with Elle and I working as a team. We split duties as evenly as we can. Fatigue and sickness don’t help either. The human psyche is not designed to be a working parent and sick at the same time.

Yet for all the difficulty, I have no complaints. We are a healthy and happy family and I am extremely grateful for that. So both my wife and I will continue to work hard every day for what we have ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s not all work work work, however. We do manage to find ways unwind at the end of a long day. My favourite vice is gaming.

Final Fantasy XIV is my favourite game of all time and definitely my go-to game when Zack and Elle go to sleep. It’s a fun way to reward myself for a day of hard work.

The world of Hydaelyn is a beautiful, rich, vibrant world to immerse myself into. The most recent expansion, Stormblood, features a compelling story that has kept me hooked for the last eight months or so.

Elle loves a hot relaxing bath and is particularly fond of Lush bath bombs… which you may already know if you’re a regular reader.

This one was called Metamorphosis. Unlike other Lush bombs, this one looked grimy and felt a bit sludgy. It turned the water so dark you couldn’t even see your own body.

As unappealing as this looks, I’d recommend Lush bath bombs as most of them are nice and relaxing. Just avoid this one perhaps ๐Ÿ˜›

She’s also fond of face masks, some of which look rather amusing!

And last but not least, there’s always a sure-fire way to relax at the end of the day… alcohol!

Worst. Pouring. Ever ๐Ÿ˜›

Well that’s all for now. I’m off to enjoy a beer and play some Final Fantasy. Thanks for reading, folks!
