The Sunshine Blogger Award

Hello, readers!

I have been nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award by Red Metal – Extra Life so thank you kindly for the nomination! Click on the link if you’re looking for interesting reads on video games as they post some good stuff 🙂

The questions that have been posed to me are below.

1. What is the dumbest competition you ever got in with your friends?

The Xbox 360 v PS3 rivalry. This is by far the dumbest argument I’ve ever had the shame of participating in. It actually heralded the beginning of the end of several friendships. But that’s a long story, so I won’t go into it here.

2. If you could form a band, which genre of music would you end up playing?

3. What is the first film you’ve watched in cinemas?

The Transformers Movie in 1986 (i.e. the good one)

4. What is the oldest film you’ve watched all the way through?

Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa. A masterpiece that I have enjoyed more than any of it’s re-imaginations.

5. Have you ever fallen asleep watching a film before?

Cats & Dogs 2. Although this may simply be because 3D movies can give me eyestrain. I think the film was manic enough to force my brain into some kind of defensive shutdown 😛

6. What is your personal record for the most number of films watched in a day?

Three! The Lord of the Rings trilogy (extended editions) I did this as part of a marathon at the Prince Charles Cinema once. You can read about it here.

7. What is the single most heretical opinion you hold when it comes to video games?

A game doesn’t have to be good to be worth playing.

8. What is your proudest achievement playing a game?

One time on Halo Reach, I gave a team-killing troll a taste of his own medicine. It wasn’t easy because friendly fire was turned off, yet he found a way to kill me and my team-mates using an airborne vehicle called a Falcon. When I figured out a way to play his own trick against him, I felt pretty good about it 😛

9. What do you believe to be one of the few advantages that gaming critics have over film critics?

I’m afraid I have no good answer to this 😛 Maybe it’s easier for them to get review codes than it is for movie critics to get early screenings?

10. Have you ever binge-watched a show?

All the time! I work at home a lot so I have Netflix on in the background to help my concentration. Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Friends, How I Met Your Mother. That’s just to name a few.

11. Do you follow any webcomics?

I’m afraid not.

So those are my answers! I’m not going to tag anyone specific to follow on from this, but any of you should feel free to answer these same questions if you like. If you do, let me know in the comments below and I’ll check out your post 🙂

Thanks again to Red Metal – Extra Life for the nomination. And thank you for reading, folks!

  1. I never really got in a console debate with anyone else growing up (I technically did, but they didn’t really go anywhere) and by the time I started my review site, I was entirely neutral to it, having the latest Nintendo and Sony consoles.

Funnily enough, though I’ve watched two of Akira Kurosawa’s films by this point (Rashomon and High and Low), I have yet to see Seven Samurai. I do have a copy, so I will check it out sooner rather than later. It wouldn’t displace the current oldest film I’ve seen so far – M, which was released in 1931.

I think that you fell asleep watching Cats & Dogs 2 because that’s the natural response to watching Cats & Dogs 2; I would be very worried if you didn’t.

It’s really impressive that you managed to watch all three Lord of the Rings films back-to-back. If I was going for a personal record, I probably would’ve cheated by watching a bunch of 90-minute films back-to-back.

    1. Lol! Well I wasn’t going for a personal record at the time 🙂 We just really wanted that full ‘single watch experience’ in the cinema for Lord of the Rings. I whole heartedly recommend Seven Samurai! I’m going to write a blog post in the future about the ‘console war’ I mentioned. Another blogging site called The Well Red Mage has also asked to hear the story in the past. It’s not something I’m proud of.

  2. I agree with you on the Console Wars thing. I’ve never personally got into an argument over it, but it just sounds dumb.

I’ve seen Ikiru by Akira Kurosawa. It was really good. It’s about a pitiful old man who is diagnosed with cancer and finds meaning in life in the remaining time he has left. The title translates to “To Live.”
