A Requiem for Heroes

Spoilers for Final Fantasy XIV

I’ve made no secret that Final Fantasy XIV is my favourite game of all time. But the newest story update to arrive – titled A Requiem for Heroes – has left me feeling absolutely elated!

Since the game relaunched in 2013, the story has been slowly building towards a war between the Eorzean Alliance and the Garlean Empire. The latest story quests have us face the empire… first across the negotiating table and then on the battlefield.

The negotiation scene was exceptional.

These are all the major characters from the different expansions or ‘seasons’ of the game. Seeing them all assemble in one place to face a huge threat was basically like seeing all the Avengers come together in Infinity War.

The writing was also excellent, featuring a rebuke of the emperor’s values that felt incredibly relevant in today’s world… particularly in light of Donald Trump’s dangerous rhetoric.

Here is an excerpt of the conversation.

“The flaws and foibles that you so abhor are what make us who we are. Every nation – even yours, Emperor Varis – is made whole through the combination of these imperfections, the strengths of one compensating for the weaknesses of another.

While it is true that man succumbs all too often to anger and avarice, he may yet overcome his baser instincts through the forming of bonds with others, fostering community and cooperation.

That the protector of an empire should not only reject these fundamental truths, but seek to change them at so dear a cost to life is indefensible.

Such a man is not fit to govern.

Needless to say, the emperor does not concede the point and quietly go home. Negotiations break down and the protagonists are forced into open war with the empire.

The battle of Ghymlit Dark is an exhilarating and epic fight through trenches, in which the players fights alongside every major NPC from the last six years. Battles are raging all around you and it really does feel like a large scale war.

The battle is ultimately won, but not without cost.

The final story quests will arrive in March, bringing this current season of the storyline to an end. Then in June a new expansion called Shadowbringers will be released, featuring what now appears to be all out war with the Empire.

I am incredibly excited to see how this story progresses. In the meantime, if you need me I’ll be spending my late nights in the Ghimlyt trenches.

Until next time, folks!
