Several weeks have now passed since the birth of our second child, Robyn.
It has been a wonderful experience overall. Even with the inevitable lack of sleep that comes with a newborn baby, this is an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything. I love that I am home to observe everything… every little mannerism… for the first time.
It’s also great because I understand more of what I see. With our first child, Zack, I had a tendency to think “Is that normal? Why does he keep shuddering like this?” Now I’m like “Yup, that’s normal for babies. Who wants some tea?”
Something I miss is what I call The Haze. By this, I’m referring to the hazy period of time immediately following the birth of a first child.
With Zack, my wife and I were able to revolve our entire life around him. The rest of the world didn’t matter. Work didn’t matter. Cooking and cleaning didn’t matter. Sleep cycles and daily schedules didn’t matter.
It was a sleep deprived three-week period of blurred day/night cycles where the only thing we needed to worry about was our child.
With our second child, however, we can’t ignore our daily responsibilities because those responsibilities now includes another child. Sleep schedules do matter. So do cooking and cleaning and everything else. There is still a ‘newborn haze’ in the sense that I frequently forget what day of the week it is… but things are not ‘as hazy’ as they were before.
So here’s a lesson I’ll happily pass onto any future parents reading this… No matter how many children you plan on having, you only get one haze! Enjoy it! 😛
