*contains spoilers for the video game Final Fantasy XIV: Reflections in Crystal*
Final Fantasy XIV is celebrating it’s 7th anniversary this week.
The development team have been trying hard to adjust to making the game from their homes as much as possible. As a result, the newest story update was late. But having played it, I can honestly say they did an excellent job.
The concluding quests wrapped up a storyline that has been in play since Shadowbringers launched last year. But what I appreciated most was the time the narrative took to reflect upon the journey, with the final quests requiring you to journey across different locations and bid goodbye to various characters.
It was unabashedly sentimental. And I love it for that.
Final Fantasy has never been afraid to have overly sentimental characters, dialogue, or storylines. It’s one of the many reasons I love the series so much. The emotional connections to characters, the world and the music matter to me more than gameplay mechanics.
There are still several story arcs running in FFXIV that need to be continued. But Reflections in Crystal represents the conclusion of a rather prominent story arc.
It would seem that after seven years, the main story is starting to wrap up. It’s hard to say. Imagine watching your favourite show and not wanting it to end, but also having a sneaky suspicion that the next season might be the final one.
In any case, Final Fantasy XIV continues to go from strength to strength with it’s storytelling and vision. I look forward to seeing what comes next.
Thanks for reading, folks 🙂
