Merry Christmas – 2020

This was always going to be an unusual day, given the lockdown restrictions. But I was determined to give my children a magical Christmas at home.

It started on the morning of Christmas Eve, with the opening of our Christmas Eve boxes. These were trinkets to enjoy before the big day, featuring things like fluffy slippers and hot chocolate.

For dinner, my wife and I continued our Christmas Eve tradition of Chinese takeaway.

After that came my favourite part of Christmas… Dressing up as Santa so my children could peek at me filling up the stockings. This required no small amount of planning and logistics.

But I’m happy to report that I nailed it 😊 I slipped away from the evening routine with our kids to quickly dress up. When they came downstairs, I could hear them squeal with delight as they watched me filling up the stockings with gifts and talking to myself in the deepest boomiest voice I could muster.

Hearing their voices – particularly my son’s – was incredibly gratifying. It made all the effort worth it.

The next morning, we all rifled through our stockings in bed together.

This was followed by the opening of presents.

Then came our traditional Christmas breakfast of bacon and pancakes with blueberries.

For the first time in almost a decade, I didn’t have to drive anywhere so I was able to enjoy a Christmas tipple with breakfast. Bubbly at. 9.30am? Don’t mind if I do!

The rest of the day was consumed by the building of toy sets and playing with our children while trying to juggle tidying up and preparing Christmas lunch.

Naturally, my daughter woke up crying precisely as I was about to sit down and enjoy a well earned meal. It’s one of the many occupational hazards of parenthood 😛 Fortunately, sleepy cuddles are just as good for the soul as Christmas food (far better, in fact!)

Assuming the children stay asleep, I shall now enjoy the evening with a Christmas tipple with my wife. Tonight’s choice are edible chocolate cups filled with Baileys liqueur and topped with whipped cream 😛

I also plan to enjoy my gift of Spider-Man: Miles Morales on the PS4.

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful Christmas Day, regardless of the woeful circumstances afflicting us all. Merry Christmas, everyone!
